Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad

Fodor's Review:

The most entertaining way to relive the halcyon days of the Old West is to take a ride on the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, a nine-hour, round-trip journey along the 45-mi railway to Silverton. You'll travel in comfort in lovingly restored coaches or in the open-air cars called gondolas as you listen to the train's shrill whistle as it chugs along. You get a good look at the Animas Valley, which in some parts is broad and green and in others is narrow and rimmed with rock. The train runs from mid-May to late October, with four departures daily between June and August and one daily at other times. A shorter excursion—to Cascade Canyon—is available in winter.

  • Cost: $65
