The Underground Mining Museum is housed in rooms that local miners blasted out of solid rock to commemorate the life of the hard-rock miner. Exhibits tracing the history of mining from 1892 to the 1960s teach you the difference between a winze (reinforced shaft leading straight down) and a windlass (hand-operated hoist). There are guided tours (at 10 and 2:30 daily), but you can also poke about on your own. After you've toured the mine, ask if you can look into the world's only underground firehouse, directly next door. If a volunteer firefighter is around, he'll gladly show you. Donations are welcome.
