The grand dame of Durango's hotels opened for business in 1887, and a loving restoration has returned her luster. Inside, the Diamond Belle Saloon glitters with crystal chandeliers, rustic oak beams, and plush velvety curtains. The individually decorated rooms are exquisite: after all, the hotel owns the country's largest collection of Victorian walnut antiques and has its own wood-carving shop to create exact period reproductions. Your room might have entertained Butch Cassidy, Louis L'Amour (he wrote The Sacketts here), Francis Ford Coppola, John Kennedy, or Marilyn Monroe (the latter two stayed here at separate times). Pros: location right in the thick of things, space has Old West feel, they will safely store your mountain bike for you. Con: when the bar downstairs gets going, rooms right above it get no peace.
