Downhill Skiing

Monarch Mountain. A small ski resort that tops out on the Continental Divide, Monarch Mountain has five chairlifts, 53 trails, 800 acres, and a 1,162-foot vertical drop. It's a family-friendly place with moderate pricing—one-day lift tickets cost $65. The resort also offers snowcat skiing on steep runs off the Divide, plus the 130 acres of extreme terrain in Mirkwood Basin. 22720 U.S. 50, 18 miles west of Salida, Salida, CO, 81227. 719/530–5000 or 888/996–7669. www.skimonarch.com. Mid-Nov.–mid-Apr., daily 9–4.

Fishing

The Arkansas River, as it spills out of the central Colorado Rockies on its course through the south central part of the state, reputedly supports a brown-trout population exceeding 3,000 fish per mile. Some of the river's canyons are deep, and some of the best fishing locations are difficult to access, making a guide or outfitter a near necessity. See www.wildlife.state.co.us/fishing for more information.

Outfitters

ArkAnglers. A good fly shop with an experienced staff, ArkAnglers offers guided float and wade trips, fly-fishing lessons, and equipment rentals. 7500 W. U.S. 50, Salida, CO, 81201. 719/539–4223. www.arkanglers.com.

Horseback Riding

Mt. Princeton Hot Springs Stables. Here you can book trail rides along the dramatic Chalk Creek Cliffs; the cost is $35 per hour or $150 per day (including lunch). 14582 County Rd. 162, Salida, CO, 81201. 866/877–3630 or 719/395–3630. www.coloradotrailrides.com.

Jeep Tours

High Country Jeep Tours. These four-wheel-drive trips venture to old mines, ghost towns, and mountain vistas. 410 U.S. Hwy. 24, Buena Vista, CO, 81211. 719/395–6111 or 866/458–6877. www.highcountryjeeptours.com.

Rafting

The Salida area is a magnet for rafting aficionados, and there are dozens of outfitters. Salida jockeys with Buena Vista for the title of "Colorado's White-Water Capital."

Snowmobiling

Monarch Snowmobile Tours. This snowmobile outfitter takes customers on winter excursions around Monarch Park. Snowmobile rentals start at $185 for a four-hour rental and go up to $230 for six hours plus lunch. 22763 U.S. 50, 18 miles west of Salida, Garfield, CO, 81227. 719/539–2572 or 800/539–2573. www.snowmobilemonarch.com.
