Larkspur is home to just a few hundred residents, but it knows how to throw a heck of a party—and a medieval one at that. The Colorado Renaissance Festival annually throws open its gates to throngs of families, chain mail–clad fantasy enthusiasts, tattooed bikers, and fun lovers of every other kind. Within the wooded 350-acre "kingdom" there are performers who deliver everything from juggling stunts and fire-eating to hypnotism and comedy. The big event happens three
times a day, when knights square off in the arena for a theatrical joust. There are also more than 200 artisans selling their wares, games, rides, and myriad food and drink booths. It's a great way to while away a summer day, though it can be a bit much to handle in the hottest weather. Larkspur is 9 miles north of Palmer Lake via Highway 18.
