Set in a pinyon pine forest about a mile past the visitor center, this campground has a trail leading to the dunes. Sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis, although groups of 10 or more might be able to reserve in advance. RVs are allowed, but there are no hookups. The campground fills up rapidly on summer weekends, and tends to have lots of families when school is out. Quiet hours start at 10 PM. Register at the kiosk. Pro: wandering among the dunes in the early morning or after the day crowds leave brings you closer to nature. Con: you must show up early to get a space, because it's first-come, first served.
