Medano Pass Primitive Road

Fodor's Review:

This 22-mi road connects Great Sand Dunes with the Wet Mountain valley and Highway 69 on the east side of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains as well as the Great Sand Dunes National Preserve via a climb to Medano Pass (10,040 feet above sea level). It is a four-wheel-drive-only road that is best driven by someone who already has good four-wheel-drive skills. (Your four-wheel-drive vehicle must have high clearance and be engineered to go over rough roads.) The road has sections of deep, loose sand, and it crosses Medano Creek nine times. Before you go, stop at the visitor center for a map and ask about current road conditions. Drive time pavement to pavement is 2½ to 3 hours.
