San Luis, founded in 1851, is the oldest incorporated town in Colorado. Murals depicting famous stories and legends of the area adorn several buildings in the town. A latter-day masterpiece is the Stations of the Cross Shrine, created by renowned local sculptor Huberto Maestas. The shrine is formally known as La Mesa de la Piedad y de la Misericordia (Hill of Piety and Mercy), and its 15 stations illustrate the last hours of Christ's life. The trail leads up to a chapel called Capilla de Todos Los Santos. San Luis's Hispanic heritage is celebrated in the San Luis Museum & Cultural Center (401 Church Pl. 719/672-3611. $2. Summer, Mon.-Sat. 9-4, Sun. noon-4; winter, weekdays 9-4). It has an extensive collection of artwork, santos (decorated figures of saints used for household devotions), retablos (religious paintings on wood), and bultos (carved religious figures).
