Taking its own name from the many peaks named after famous universities, the 167,714-acre Collegiate Peaks Wilderness Area includes more 14,000-foot-high mountains (14) than any other wilderness area in the lower 48 states, and 6 more peaks with summits above 13,800 feet. Forty miles of the Continental Divide snake through the area as well. The most compelling reason to visit Buena Vista is for the almost unequaled variety of hikes, climbs, and biking trails here. Two ranger offices, one in Leadville and one in Salida, handle inquiries about this region.
