Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument is a primeval rain forest that was perfectly preserved by volcanic ash 35-40 million years ago. This little-known site is a treasure trove for paleontologists. The visitor center offers guided walks into the monument, or you can follow the well-marked hiking trails and lose yourself in the Eocene epoch, among 300-foot petrified redwoods. From Cripple Creek, take Teller County Road 1, which goes right through the monument. It's about 17 mi from town.
