The Cripple Creek and Victor Narrow Gauge Railroad weaves over reconstructed trestles and past abandoned mines to the Anaconda ghost town, then back up to Cripple Creek during the 45-minute ride. In the boom days of the 1870s through the silver crash of 1893, more than 50 ore-laden trains made this run daily. For years, Victor has been a sad town, virtually a ghost of its former self. Walking the streets—past abandoned or partially restored buildings—has been an eerie experience that does far more to evoke the mining (and post-mining) days than tarted-up Cripple Creek. But there's a partial renewal of the town, because Victor is again home to a gold mine, the Cripple Creek & Victor Mining Company, which is the largest gold mine in the state.
