Rocky Mountain National Park Sights

Shadow Mountain Fire Lookout

  • Building/Architectural Site

Updated 10/02/2013

Fodor's Review

The lookout, which gives you a 360-degree view of the surrounding peaks and lakes, was built in 1932 and was used to station watchmen and -women until 1968. It was restored in the mid-1990s and is now listed in the National Register of Historic Places. To access the lookout, start at the East Shore Trailhead (just outside the park, in the Arapahoe National Recreation Area), between Grand and Shadow Mountain lakes, and hike approximately 5 mi along the East Shore and Shadow Mountain trails. There's a small fee for parking in the recreation area.
