Fodor's Review

Perched regally on a hill, with a commanding view of town, the Stanley is one of Colorado's great old hotels, featuring Georgian colonial–style architecture and a storied, haunted history that includes being the inspiration for Stephen King's novel The Shining. Not even chipped paint and crowds of day-trippers can diminish the Stanley Hotel's revered status. Rooms are decorated with antiques and period reproductions. The adjacent lodge is pet-friendly and comes with Continental breakfast. Book a treatment at the Amethyst Spa to unwind after a day exploring. The Cascades restaurant offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and the renovated Whiskey Bar serves nearly 1,000 whiskeys. The hotel, which opened in 1909, conducts historical and "ghost" tours daily and is a popular location for weddings.
