Exploring the Rockies: This section, called the Front Range by locals, butts up against the Denver metro area, so it's easy to explore interesting towns and enjoy the mountain lifestyle.
Coors Brewery: An entertaining tour ending in a sudsy stop at the Coors Tavern for an informal (and free) tasting of up to three brews. You'll see the steeping, roasting, and milling of the barley, then tour the Brew House where the "malt mash" is cooked in massive copper kettles.
Georgetown Loop Railroad: Peering out the window at the raw, steep mountainside and the rickety trestle bridge on the vintage train ride from Georgetown to Silverplume provides an eye-opening lesson in the way miners traveled to work in the 1800s. Take a tour of the mine at the midway point of the route.
Winter Park: The variety of slopes offers something for everyone: a blocked-off area for beginners and chutes and inbounds off piste-style terrain for experts. The resort has an outstanding children's program.
St. Mary's Glacier: It's a relatively easy hike up, albeit at a high altitude, to a spectacular, often year-round glacier.
