Fodor's Review

The most entertaining way to relive the halcyon days of the Old West is to take a ride on the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, a nine-hour round-trip journey along the 45-mile railway to Silverton. You'll travel in comfort in lovingly restored coaches or in the open-air cars called gondolas as you listen to the train's shrill whistle as it chugs along. On the way, you get a good look at the Animas Valley, which in some parts is broad and green and in others narrow and rimmed with rock. A shorter excursion—to Cascade Canyon, 26 miles away—in heated coaches is available in winter. The train departs from the Durango Depot, constructed in 1882 and beautifully restored. Next door is the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum.

The wife and the boys loved this trip. I did this probably over 25 years ago with my parents. It was fun to share the same experience with my boys, and I was happy to see that nothing had changed. Excellent service, beautiful scenery...the scenery can't be beat. And you have to love the fat squirrels. The only reason I say 4 stars on Don't Miss is because it's probably more family orientated and less on the crazy adventure side. So, anyone would enjoy

it but some might find it not as exciting as they like if they are adventure nuts.
