Mesa Verde National Park Sights

Spruce Tree House Review

This 138-room complex is the best-preserved site in the park, and the rooms and ceremonial chambers are more accessible to visitors than those in other sites. Here you can actually enter a kiva, via a short ladder, just as the original inhabitants did. It's a great place for kids to explore, but because of its location in the heart of the Chapin Mesa area, Spruce Tree House can resemble a crowded playground during busy periods. Tours are self-guided (allow 45 minutes to an hour), but a park ranger is on site to answer questions. The trail leading to Spruce Tree House starts behind the museum and leads you 100 feet down into the canyon. You may find yourself breathing hard by the time you make it back up to the parking lot.
