Best Campgrounds in Great Sand Dunes
Great Sand Dunes has one campground, open year-round. During weekends in the summer, it can fill up with RVs and tents by midafternoon. Black bears live in the preserve, so when camping there, keep your food, trash, and toiletries in the trunk of your car (or use bear-proof containers). There is one campground and RV park near the entrance to Great Sand Dunes, and several others in the area.
Pinyon Flats Campground. Set in a pine forest about a mile past the visitor center, this campground has a trail leading to the dunes. Sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis; RVs are allowed, but there are no hookups. On the main park road, near the visitor center 719/378–6399.
