The Fodor's Five

The five things you need to know before traveling to Denver

# 1

Denver’s 300 days of sunshine makes for a bright visit nearly year-round.

Explore the Mile High City’s diverse neighborhoods, dozens of museums, cheer for a half-dozen sports teams, hike through the city’s extensive park system, or meander along the Cherry Creek Trail with miles of walking and biking paths. The Mile High City is a visitor mecca for Western culture and food. There are niche, walkable neighborhoods surrounding the city core, all with a different feel and a variety of attractions.

# 2

Use public transportation in Denver.

Denver’s public transportation, Regional Transportation District (RTD), has light and commuter rail at stations throughout the city and surrounding suburbs including stops near major attractions such as sports venues, universities, Denver International Airport and Union Station. When weather allows, which it usually does, there are plenty of e-cycle and e-scooter rentals throughout the city that are easily navigable through mobile applications. RTD also offers a free bus ride up and down the 16th Street Mall that starts just blocks from the State Capital.

# 3

Denver’s culinary scene has been trending with a newly-launched Michelin presence.

Buzzy and intimate eateries, especially in the RiNo (River North), Highlands, and East Colfax neighborhoods will fill up on weekends, but mid-week strolls through various food halls such as The Source, Stanley Marketplace, and Denver Central Market are a great way to get a taste of the city’s offerings. Brunch at Colorado-born Luciles Creole Café or Snooze, both with multiple locations, are a weekend favorite. The food truck scene is thriving throughout the city and there are different days throughout the week where trucks will gather in various parks for a tasty culinary landscape.

# 4

Mile High City’s sports and outdoor recreation rule the city.

The Denver Broncos and Nuggets, Colorado Avalanche, Mammoth, Rapids, Rockies; there’s never a shortage of professional sports games in the Mile High City. Take a stroll around iconic Washington Park with a small lake, views of the Rockies and Denver’s skyline. Sloan’s Lake is home to Denver’s annual Dragon Boat Festival, City Park has the Denver Zoo and the City Golf Course, and don’t miss the Chesseman Park Ghost Tour. There are also loads of baseball fields, disc golf courses, soccer fields and playgrounds for children.  It doesn’t matter if you want to see a sport or play one, Denver relishes in its outdoor culture and opportunities.

# 5

This is what makes Denver unique.

Aside from all four seasons, low humidity and few bugs, Denver’s 300 days of sunshine and assortment of activity has long been an international draw. Denver’s annual Western Stock Show, the convention center located in the heart of the capital, theater, music, and numerous city festivals attract those seeking a cultural destination. Bikes and brews are a popular combination with tours of multiple breweries per ride. Denver has over 100 breweries and a beer trail. And it's easy to take in an impressive sunset overlooking the Colorado Rocky Mountains.
