As befits a multiethnic crossroads, Denver lays out a dizzying range of eateries. Head for LoDo, the Highland District, the RiNo Art District, or south of the city for the more inventive kitchens. Try Federal Street for cheap ethnic eats—especially Mexican and Vietnamese—and expect authentic takes on classic Italian, French, and Asian cuisines. Throughout Denver, menus at trendy restaurants focus on locally sourced, organic, and healthier options; Denver's top chefs continue to gain the attention of national food magazines and win culinary competitions, but between the increased exposure and the rapid influx of residents, prices have skyrocketed to match or exceed those of larger cities.
This always-packed spot is worth the trip to Highland for such South American fare as shrimp and scallops sautéed with fresh herbs, coconut milk, and hot chilies or feijoada completa, the Brazilian national dish of black-bean stew and smoked meats, accompanied with fried bananas. With its vivid paintings and colorful traditional masks, it always seems to be a festive party here. It's frequented by locals in the know, especially those looking to try one of their 75-plus rums on hand.
It's hard to pick out this house from the ones that surround it in this cozy neighborhood, but the steady crowds streaming in and out of its art-lined dining rooms are a sure sign that this isn't a private residence. They come for the family-style servings—entrée prices are for four-serving portions—of outstanding Italian fare. Tomatoes, garlic, basil, and good-quality olive oil make up the base of many of the meals, and the sauces are good: puttanesca, Bolognese, carbonara. The menu is written out on chalkboards, and there's a private back room for big groups.

Black dominates the glossy interior of the swank Ollie's, which has a large outdoor patio and exceptionally well-crafted Chinese food. The whole steamed sea bass in black-bean sauce is one of the menu's highlights, along with mu shu pork and crispy duck. Lunch specials make this a popular midday spot, and the wine list is unusually well chosen for a Chinese restaurant. Reservations are taken for parties of six or more.
A complete overhaul of the menu transformed the former Parallel Seventeen into a bistro that serves Asian-inspired dishes with an emphasis on seasonal and locally sourced ingredients, and includes a lengthy roster of small plates. The atmosphere remains casually chic, and at night, the cozy patio with its twinkly lights beckons with a happy hour devoted to fun cocktails. The popular weekend brunch also features small plates–-try the beignets with housemade apple butter–-as does lunch, where the duck confit tacos are a must.
A basic contemporary American menu offers classics done well at the Nickel, the restaurant located in the Hotel Teatro. Enjoy a top-notch burger, an entrée-sized salad, or Mediterranean-style salmon, all while kicking back in sumptuously upholstered chairs. Breakfast and weekend brunch offer some unique options like carrot cake pancakes. The room takes terrific advantage of the natural light that floods the space, making the ambience feel impressive and special. Rooftop bees provide in-house honey.
Holistic health guru Dr. Andrew Weil has opened restaurants in select locations in 17 states, and this venture in Cherry Creek, where his intensive focus is on anti-inflammatory preparations and antioxidant ingredients prepared with an international flair, has met with great success. Don't expect all-vegetarian, however; the menu offers plenty of meat, particularly lean bison and turkey, as well as fish, tempeh, and other meat substitutes. Trendy cocktails—cucumber margarita or blueberry acai mojito, for example—and natural sodas add to the appeal for the younger crowds that flock to the communal tables for small plates and thin-crust pizzas. The kids' menu is impressively healthy and appealing with its mini grass-fed burger and chicken teriyaki bowl.
Snag a booth at this small, casual café three blocks from Coors Field whose name is Italian for "let's eat now!" A larger version of the tiny original in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Mangiamo serves three well-executed, Italian-inspired meals every day but Sunday and Monday dinner. Menu items include frittatas and homemade oatmeal for breakfast; Caprese salads, thin-crusted pizzas, and thickly packed panini for lunch; and pastas and other Mediterranean dishes join those same pizzas and panini at dinner. Afterward, good luck choosing just one of the many gelato flavors for dessert. Don't miss the inexpensive Italian wines by the bottle.
