Lumber Baron Inn & Gardens
2555 W 37th Ave., Denver, Colorado 80211, USAWhy We Like It
This gem was saved from the wrecking ball in the early 1990s and rehabilitated with love so that those who adore the bed and breakfast experience can enjoy it today. There are few options for places to stay in this mostly residential part of town, but the Northside is surrounded by hip dining, drinking, and shopping corridors with cheery names like LoHi, Sunnyside, Highlands, and Berkeley that are worth exploring.
Fodor's Expert Review
Built in 1890, this historic mansion B&B is a quintessential example of Queen Anne architecture; history buffs and inn-lovers will adore the craftsmanship and detailing. The namesake magnate who built the home showcased his wealth by using various hardwoods, large bedrooms by Victorian standards, and devoting the top floor to a ballroom (now used for weddings and special events). This boutique bed and breakfast has five bedrooms and many shared spaces as well as quiet corners.
You Should Know Beyond its impressive size, the inn is easy to spot by the giant star affixed to the roof of the turret. Previous owners added the Mid-century modern twist—the star from Denver landmark Celebrity Sports Center, an entertainment venue popular from the 1960s until mid-1990s.
