Within the Brainard Lake Recreation Area, campers here have access to the fishing and excellent hiking trails around the lake and in the Indian Peaks Wilderness. Hikers should become familiar with the wilderness regulations before heading out on the trail. At an elevation of 10,350 feet, you're high enough for views of the peaks of the Continental Divide, but low enough to be in spruce and fir forests. All sites accommodate RVs, tents, campers, and trailers. The maximum vehicle length is 45 feet. There are no hookups or showers. Reservations can be made through the National Recreation Reservation Service, but half of the sites in this campground are not reservable and are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Pros: quiet area; mountain views; hiking trails nearby. Cons: 45 minutes outside Boulder; area fills with nonresidents for recreation activities.
