Fodor's Review:

It's worth the drive to Lafayette for the savory chile verde (green chile) that Efrain cooks every day for the burritos. His family's homey café has simple, green-painted arbors and hand-painted tables. The porch is great for relaxing before dinner with a margarita, served in a pint-size mason jar. Efrain prepares low-fat, authentic entrées with fresh beef and succulent pulled chicken. The large-grain rice is light, and refried beans are creamy but not greasy. Finish your meal with a crisp, hot sopapilla (a light, fried pastry served hot with honey). Expect to wait for a table on a weekend night.

Self serve beverages because we were ignored. It took waitress more than 20 minutes to greet table, then disappeared, while other tables were serviced. It's unbelievable how this place stays in business with the shoggy service.

The best, most authentic and mouth-watering Mexican food I have ever had...consistently very good to excellent across the entire menu. The service is friendly, but Efrain's is so popular that one must understand if the waitstaff is in a bit of a hurry sometimes, especially on weekends.
A friend's wife is from Mexico and says it is easy to tell there are people from Mexico in the kitchen, and that this isn't typical "Mexican food for Americans".

I was very disappointed as I had heard good reviews of Efrain's. The wait for a six seater table was a long time. The waiter was rude right off the bat and proved himself to be the worst waiter I have ever experienced. And the food was nothing special. The waiter never re-appeared once the food was finally delivered. We had to get up and get our own to-go boxes from the service station. We had to ask for our bill. After all that, we had to ask the hostess if she could run our charge card. She asked how everything was and I told her the truth. She was sympathetic and said she would let the owners know how we felt about the server. We paid the bill and left without tipping. We will definitely never ever go back.
