South of downtown is the University of Colorado at Boulder. Red sandstone buildings with tile roofs (built in the "Rural Italian" architectural style that Charles Z. Klauder created in the early 1920s) outline the campus's green lawns and small ponds. The original campus began in 1875 with the construction of Old Main, which borders the Norlin Quadrangle (on the National Register of Historic Places), a broad lawn where students sun themselves or play a quick round of Frisbee between classes. The CU Heritage Center (Old Main Bldg. on Norlin Quadrangle. 303/492-6329. Free. Weekdays 10-4) preserves the history of the university -- including notable student pranks and a lunar sample on long-term loan from NASA. Also displayed are the personal memorabilia of alumni such as Marilyn Van Derbur, Robert Redford, and Glenn Miller. One room is devoted to CU's 17 astronauts, including Ellison Onizuka, who was killed aboard the Challenger space shuttle in 1986, and Kalpana Chawla, who died on the Columbia in 2003. The natural history collection at the University of Colorado Museum (Henderson Bldg. 303/492-6892. cumuseum.colorado.edu. Free. Weekdays 9-5, Sat. 9-4, Sun. 10-4) includes dinosaur relics and has permanent and changing exhibits.
