Fodor's Review

Perched regally on a hill, with a commanding view of the town, the Stanley is one of Colorado's great old hotels, impeccably maintained in its historic state, yet with many modern conveniences, including a spa. In fact, it just may be the greatest hotel in Colorado. Inventor and entrepreneur F.O. Stanley began construction in 1907, and when the hotel opened in 1909 it was the first in the world with electricity and the first in the United States with in-room telephones.

The hotel that inspired Stephen King's novel The Shining conducts historical and "ghost" tours daily, and the hotel is a popular location for weddings. Many of the sunny rooms have mountain views and are decorated with antiques and period reproductions; the adjacent lodge is pet-friendly and comes with a refreshing (and free) breakfast. Don't miss the Cascades restaurant and chef Rich Beichner's smoked pheasant chowder. There's also the stunningly renovated Whiskey Bar with nearly 600 whiskey labels. Ask your bartender to tell you the story about Jim Carrey sleeping there while filming "Dumb & Dumber."
