In Boulder

Boulder Creek Path. This path winds through town for about 5½ miles from Boulder Canyon in the west to the Stazio Ballfields (near the intersection of Arapahoe and 55th) in the east, connecting to more than 100 miles of city and greenbelt trails and paths. You can access paths from nearly every cross street in town, but don't always count on parking nearby. Trailheads: From downtown, the best access points are behind public library parking lot on south side of Canyon Blvd. between 9th St. and Broadway or in Central Park on 13th St. between Canyon Blvd. and Arapahoe Rd., Boulder, CO, 80301.

Marshall Mesa/Community Ditch Trails. The 8-mile round-trip Community Ditch portion of the Marshall Mesa/Community Ditch Trails takes you up through pine stands and over a plateau where you can look down on Boulder, with the Flatirons and the Rockies in full view. The trail continues across Highway 93 almost to Eldorado Springs. Trailhead: Just east of intersection of Hwy. 93 and Marshall Rd. Parking available., Boulder, CO, 80305.

In the Mountains

Canyon Loop Trail. For scenic cycling at a moderate to advanced level, try the 6-mile round-trip trek on the Canyon Loop Trail in Betasso Preserve, about 6 miles west of Boulder. Bikes are prohibited Wednesdays and Saturdays. Trailhead: Take Broadway south to Hwy. 119 (Canyon Blvd.) and go west to Sugarloaf Rd.; turn right onto Sugarloaf and then right again onto Betasso Rd. Look for the turnout on the left., Boulder, CO.

Switzerland Trail. For a long journey in the peaks west of Boulder, take the Switzerland Trail, a 14-mile ride one-way that follows the route of an old narrow-gauge railroad, taking you past the historic mining hamlet of Sunset. Trailhead: From Broadway, drive west 5 miles on Canyon Blvd./Hwy. 119 and turn right onto Sugarloaf Rd./Hwy. 72. After 5 miles, turn right onto Sugarloaf Mountain Rd. Walker Ranch. For a strenuous mountain bike ride, head 8 miles west out of town to Walker Ranch; the 7.8-mile loop has great views of the Indian Peaks. Trailhead: Look for trailhead on east side of Flagstaff Rd., about 7.5 miles west of Baseline Rd., Boulder, CO, 80302.
