Fodor's Review

This sprawling recreation area, named in honor of a Ute Indian sub-chief, stretches for 40 miles along U.S. 50, between Gunnison and Montrose. It encompasses three reservoirs along the Gunnison River: Blue Mesa, Colorado's largest lake at almost 20 miles long, and Morrow Point and Crystal, fjord-like reservoirs in the upper Black Canyon of the Gunnison. All three are excellent spots for fishing, boating, and paddling, although only Blue Mesa offers boat ramps. You'll find great fly-fishing east of the Blue Mesa Reservoir, on the Gunnison River. Camping and hiking are also available. The Elk Creek Visitor Center on U.S. 50 is open year-round for trip planning, boat-tour reservations, and pass/permit sales; call for hours. Entrance to the recreation area is free, unless you use the east entrance, which is inside Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park ($15 entrance fee).
