Fishing in Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park
The three dams built upriver from the park in Curecanti National Recreation Area have created prime trout fishing in the waters below. In fact, the section of Gunnison River that goes through the park is designated Gold Medal Water, with abundant rainbow and brown trout. Certain restrictions apply: Only artificial flies and lures are permitted, and a Colorado fishing license is required for people aged 16 and older. Rainbow trout are catch-and-release only, and there are size and possession limits on brown trout (check at the visitor center). Most anglers access the river from the bottom of East Portal Road; an undeveloped trail goes along the riverbank for about ¾ mi.
