Paragliding in Aspen and Snowmass

It seems a pity to enjoy Aspen only from a horizontal viewpoint when so much of its scenery is vertical. If you've ever considered paragliding,Aspen—with its shining river and black-diamond ski slopes—is the place to do it. Though they look like rectangular parachutes, paragliders are actually classed as aircraft and can fly high on warm thermals. After a short safety briefing, you'll be harnessed to an instructor for a mad dash down one of the steep ski slopes until the wind fills the "wing" and you are airborne. The ride along the ridges and over the valley can last anywhere from 10 minutes to over an hour, depending on the weather. Mornings are best; gusty afternoon winds can sometimes ground flights until the following day.

Aspen Expeditions (426 S. Spring St. 970/925-7625. www.aspenexpeditions.com) provides everything you'll need for a safe and memorable flight.
