You won't find a better spa retreat in the eastern Sierra than the Double Eagle. Dwarfed by towering, craggy peaks, the resort is in a spectacularly beautiful spot along a creek, near June Lake, 20 minutes north of Mammoth Lakes. Accommodations are in comfortable knotty-pine two-bedroom cabins that sleep up to six, or in cabin suites with efficiency kitchens; all come fully equipped with modern amenities. If you don't want to cook (the nearest grocery is in Mammoth), the Eagles Landing Restaurant serves three meals a day, but the quality is erratic. For good food, you'll have to drive. Spa services and treatments are available for nonguests by reservation. Pros: Pretty setting, generous breakfast, good for families. Cons: Could use some updating, expensive.
