Kings Canyon Scenic Byway

Fodor's Review:

Winding alongside the powerful Kings River (the byway along Route 180, east of Grant Grove), drive below the towering granite cliffs and past two tumbling waterfalls in the Kings River Canyon. One mile past the Cedar Grove Village turnoff, the U-shape canyon becomes broader, and you can see evidence of its glacial past and the effects of wind and water on the granite. Four miles farther is Grand Sentinel Viewpoint, where you can see the 3,500-foot-tall granite monolith and some of the most interesting rock formations in the canyon. The drive dead-ends in the canyon, so you must double back. It's about one hour each way.
