Mineral King Road

Fodor's Review:

Accessible from Memorial Day weekend through October (weather permitting), this small, winding, rough, steep road begins outside the park south of the Ash Mountain entrance, off Route 198. Trailers and RVs are prohibited. The exciting 25-mi drive ascends approximately 6,000 feet to a subalpine valley, where there are a ranger station and limited facilities. Bring a picnic lunch. Many backpackers use this as a trailhead, and you can take a fine day hike from here as well. Allow 90 minutes for the one-way drive.
