The Southern Sierra: Places to Explore

Three Rivers

Numerous towns and cities tout themselves as "gateways" to Sequoia and Kings Canyon national parks, but one that merits the distinction is frisky Three Rivers, a foothills hamlet along the Kaweah River. Close to Sequoia National Park's Ash Mountain and Lookout Point entrances, Three Rivers is a good spot to find a room when park lodgings are full. Either because Three Rivers residents appreciate their idyllic setting or because they know that tourists are their bread and butter, you'll find them almost uniformly pleasant and eager to share tips about the best spots for "Sierra surfing" the Kaweah's smooth, moss-covered rocks or where to find the best cell phone reception (it's off to the cemetery for Verizon customers).
