Hiking

Hiking in Mammoth is stellar, especially along the trails that wind through the pristine alpine scenery around the Lakes Basin. Carry lots of water; and remember, you're above 8,000-foot elevation, and the air is thin.

U.S. Forest Service Ranger Station. Stop at the ranger station, just east of the town of Mammoth Lakes, for an area trail map and permits for backpacking in wilderness areas. 2510 Main St., Hwy. 203, Mammoth Lakes, CA, 93546. 760/924–5500. www.fs.usda.gov/main/inyo.
