Hiking

Hiking in Mammoth is stellar, especially along the trails that wind through alpine scenery around the Lakes Basin. Carry lots of water; and remember, the air is thin at 8,000-plus feet.

You can pick up trail map and permits for backpacking in wilderness areas at the Mammoth Lakes Visitor Center just east of town. For descriptions of more than 300 miles of trails—as well as maps and a wealth of information on recreation in Mammoth Lakes and the Inyo National Forest in all seasons—visit the Mammoth Lakes Trail System website (www.mammothtrails.org).
