South Coast and Catalina Island Sights

San Clemente Review

Travelers who shun the throngs in favor of a low-key beach experience—the part of the OC coast that Hollywood doesn't base TV series on—should drive 10 mi south of Dana Point on Pacific Coast Highway to San Clemente. There, 20 square mi of prime bicycling terrain await. Camp Pendleton, the country's largest Marine Corps base, welcomes cyclists to use some of its roads—just don't be surprised to see a troop helicopter taking off right beside you.

San Clemente State Beach. Surfers favor San Clemente State Beach, which has camping facilities, RV hookups, and fire rings. San Onofre State Beach, just south of San Clemente, is another surfing destination. Below the bluffs are 3½ mi of sandy beach, where you can swim, fish, and watch wildlife. 949/492-3156. www.parks.ca.gov.com.
