Orange County and Catalina Island Sights

Balboa Peninsula

Updated 04/03/2014

Fodor's Review

Newport's best beaches are on Balboa Peninsula, where many jetties pave the way to ideal swimming areas. The most intense bodysurfing place in Orange County and arguably on the West Coast, known as the Wedge, is at the south end of the peninsula. It was created by accident in the 1930s when the Federal Works Progress Administration built a jetty to protect Newport Harbor. Rip currents mean it's strictly for the pros—but it sure is fun to watch an experienced local

ride it.

Tour Newport Harbor

A must do when visiting Newport Beach is a harbor tour with Watts on the Harbor Cruises. They take you on a 2 1/2 hour tour of all the main channels. Lunch, dinner, or hors d' oeuvres with wine or soft drinks. The information they share is fascinating and along with the wildlife, sea lions, sometimes dolfins they also have a beautiful black swan "Rupert" that comes up to the boat and eats wheat grass seed from the owner. It's great for kids and

adults and so relaxing and quiet on an electric boat.
