Fodor's Expert Review Glendeven Inn & Lodge

8205 N. Hwy. 1, Little River, California, 95456, USA Fodor's Choice

If Mendocino is the New England village of the West Coast, then Glendeven—an 1867 farmhouse and several other buildings—is the local country manor, with sea views and 8 acres of gardens, complete with llamas and chickens that provide eggs for three-course breakfasts served in-room. The farmhouse has five guest rooms, three with fireplaces. The 1987 Stevenscroft Building, with its high gabled roof, contains four rooms with fireplaces. The ten large-windowed rooms of the Lodge, also erected in 1987, have flat-screen TVs (which the other two buildings' accommodations lack) and fireplaces. The carriage-house suite, above an art gallery, makes for a romantic retreat. The inn is just off the road; the quietest rooms are on the far side of the property.
