Ferndale
Though gift shops and ice-cream stores comprise a fair share of the businesses here, Ferndale remains a fully functioning small town. There's a butcher, a small grocery, and a local saloon (the westernmost in the contiguous United States), and descendants of the Portuguese and Scandinavian dairy farmers who settled this town continue to raise dairy cows in the surrounding pastures. Ferndale is best known for its colorful Victorian architecture, the queen of which is the Gingerbread Mansion, built in 1899. Many shops carry a self-guided tour map that highlights the town's most interesting historical buildings.
