Desert vineyards? Industry scoffing didn't deter Cecil W. McLester, a graduate of UC Davis's renowned wine-making and viticulture program, from crafting decent wines—yes, from grapes grown on-site—including an award-winning Tempranillo and Paloma Blanca, a Riesling-style blend. Cecil has since retired, but the winery is still going strong. It also hosts a Saturday Farmers Market (from May through November between 9 and noon) and sells grass-fed buffalo and other game
and exotic meats such as venison, pheasant, and wild boar.
