A bustling stop for motorists traveling to and from Mammoth Lakes, this shop is crammed with delicious pastries, cookies, rolls, and other baked goods. The biggest draw, though, is the sheepherder bread, a hand-shaped and stone hearth–baked sourdough that was introduced during the gold rush by immigrant Basque sheepherders in 1907. That bread and others baked here are sliced to make the mammoth sandwiches the shop is also famous for.

From my earliest memories as a child, whenever my parents passed thru Bishop we always stopped at Schat's. Almost 50 years later I still do the same with my children. Their breads are second to none and make a perfect sandwich for a fisherman's or hiker's lunch. The Sheepherder's Bread is the signiture item, but they feature different varieties of breads baked goods by season and by the day of the week. In addition to Sheepherder's Bread, some of
my other favorite bread varieties of bread include Asiago Cheese Breads, Honi Squaw Bread, and their Sourdough. The store is divided in half. One side is pastries and cookies (the strudel is to die for!) and the other side is all breads and the deli. Check out the deli for a lunch on the run (and an outstanding Pastrami sandwich).
