The Mojave Desert Places

Lake Havasu City, AZ

In summer Angelenos throng to Lake Havasu. This wide spot in the Colorado River, which has backed up behind Parker Dam, is accessed from its eastern shore in Arizona. Here you can swim; zip around on a Jet Ski; paddle a kayak; fish for trout, bass, or bluegill; or boat beneath the London Bridge, one of the desert's oddest sights. During sunset the views are breathtaking.

Once home to the Mohave Indians, this riverfront community (which means "blue water") was settled in the 1930s with the construction of Parker Dam.
