Fodor's Review

The "Gourmet Ghetto" may be Berkeley's top culinary destination, but this offshoot is a major draw itself.

Vintage Berkeley. Daily wine-tastings of California wines from smaller vineyards take place at this neighborhood wine shop in a beautifully restored water pumping station. 2113 Vine St., at Walnut St., 94709. 510/665–8600.

Love at First Bite. Take the stairs up to Walnut Square's top floor to find this cupcakery showcasing scrumptious confections. 1510 Walnut St., at Vine St., 94709. 510/848–5727.

Peet's. When this spot,

the original, opened at Vine and Walnut streets in 1966, the unparalleled coffee was roasted in the store and brewed by the cup. A small exhibit in the back room chronicles the company's evolution. The café is dense with Berkeley characters inside and out. 2124 Vine St., at Walnut St., 94709. 510/841–0564.
