Bette's Oceanview Diner

Updated 05/02/2014

Fodor's Review

Buttermilk pancakes are just one of the specialties at this 1930s-inspired diner complete with checkered floors and burgundy booths. Huevos rancheros and lox and eggs are other breakfast options; kosher franks, generous slices of pizza, and a slew of sandwiches are available for lunch. The wait for a seat can be quite long; thankfully, 4th Street was made for strolling. If you're starving, head to Bette's to Go, next door, for takeout.

Avoid This Attitudinal Overrated Noisy Joint

I live three blocks from Fourth Street and have eaten at Bette's many times. It has gone from a notable spot that was worth the attention and wait, to a substandard establishmnet on all fronts. Tourists are convinced by the crowds to wait for hours to eat boring, unseasoned breakfasts that taste as if a sorority girl begrudgingly made them with a hangover. The eggs are "custard style" - so if you're up for possible salmonella - here's your chance.

The pancakes are often underdone, so you're eating wet, dough instead of fluffy cakes. What's worse than the decline in the once decent food, is the extremely rude service people. They rarely smile; and if they do it's likely because they're making an inside joke at the expense of one of their customers. I've been seated at the counter and heard the catty, rude and disrespectful things they've said about their paying, tipping customers. Another downer: NOT KID FRIENDLY. Very cramped space; servers yelling "behind you" and, although they will put a child seat at the table, again they tend to be extra rude to folks with kids. Once I witnessed them actually tell a mom with an infant and toddler to please get their todller to stop whining. (The child was not even crying but simply fussing a bit.) For the types that love to be abused by attitudinal wait staff - this is the place for you. Otherwise, if you want some really great breakfasts in Berkeley- try Jimmy Bean's down the street at Gilman and 6th; Fellini that does a great weekend brunch on Sat and Sun on University just below Sacramento; the Homemade Cafe on Sacramento and Dwight (fantastic pesto eggs!)or La Note on Shattuck for amazing fresh French pastries while you wait justifiably for a good authentic Provencal egg breakfast. Why pay to be mistreated and underserved?

Crazy, cute '50s diner

If only this place were three times as large. A lot of people have given up because of the long waits. Try to go off peak hours, maybe early morning or later afternoon. Breakfast is their specialty, but their salads and lunch items are great too. Don't go there hungry, put your name in, and then hang out at Hear Music next door or walk to the terrarium, which is so cool! (Unless reptiles and amphibians scare you.)
