At this cliff-top resort—the only inn and restaurant for miles around—glass walls in most rooms open to awesome, unobstructed ocean views. Though not especially luxurious, some rooms have spa tubs, kitchenettes, and fireplaces. The restaurant ($$-$$$) is a good place to fill up on standard American fare—sandwiches, salads, pastas, and main courses—before or after the long, winding Highway 1 drive. Even if you're just passing by, stop to stretch your legs on the 14 acres of lush gardens above the sea; you can pick up souvenirs, a burger, or an espresso to go. Pros: On the cliffs, great food, idyllic views. Cons: Busy road stop during the day, often booked for weekend weddings.
