If you'd like to encounter nature without roughing it, you can try "comfort camping" at El Capitan Canyon. The safari tents and cedar cabins here have fresh linens and creature comforts.

I read about this location in a US Airways magazine and it immediately stuck a cord. You can stay in cabins or safari tents in a secluded area off the 101 a few miles north of Santa Barbara. The tent experience really stood out though. The tent includes one or two beds, electricity, towels/bathroom supplies and free wi-fi, but other than that you have to carry in everything else you need. Each tent has a picnic table and firepit and there is access to well-maintained bathrooms & showers. There is access to numerous biking/hiking trails and there is a pool with beach access not far away. I'd recommend bringing a lock for the tent for safety reasons and anything else that you would want to make on or around a fire. Why aren't there more locations like this!?!?!
