Fodor's Review:

If you choose to drive north via U.S. 101 without detouring to the Solvang/Santa Ynez area, you will drive right past some good beaches. In succession from east to west, El Capitan, Gaviota, and Refugio state beaches all have campsites, picnic tables, and fire rings.
