This luxurious retreat, designed exclusively for adult getaways, has remarkably environmentally conscious architecture. The redwood guesthouses, all of which have views of the sea or the mountains, blend almost invisibly into a wooded cliff 1,200 feet above the ocean. Each unit has its own fireplace, stereo, private deck, and massage table. On-site activities include everything from yoga to stargazing. The inn's restaurant, Sierra Mar ($$$$), serves cutting-edge American food at lunch and dinner, including a stellar four-course prix-fixe menu. Pros: World-class resort, spectacular views, gorgeous property with hiking trails. Cons: Expensive, austere design, not a good choice if you're scared of heights.
