With lots of recreational facilities and a range of accommodations—from basic state park-style cabins to motel-style standard rooms to large fireplace suites—this 25-acre retreat up the hill from the East Village is a good choice for families. Walls can be thin in buildings dating as far back as the 1940s; a separate cluster of luxury suites and rooms opened in 2006. The lodge is always busy: its extensive gardens are popular with wedding parties, groups and conferences are big business, and bands play light rock, folk, and jazz in the lounge. Pros: Short walk from downtown, verdant gardens, spacious grounds. Cons: Front desk service and housekeeping not always top-quality, some units could use an update.

We were looking for a reasonably priced room for 3 adults (parents and 1 adult son) in Cambria. This hotel fit the bill very nicely. Our room was one of the older ones in the hotel -- but large, clean, comfortable and with a terrific view of a nature path and the Santa Lucia Mountains. Good buffet breakfast included (you may eat indoors or in their lovely gardens). Within walking distance of the village. Would definitely go back.

Whilst our room was adequate, we were disappointed with the hotel - thank goodness we'd got a discount rate. The spa consisted of a massage table in one room, and the jacuzzi looked to be in a darkened room and filthy. Part of the hotel site seemed to be under development too with a new pool being constructed.
