$$$-$$$$, Los Olivos
Fodor's Review:
Set among orchards and vineyards in the tiny town of Ballard, 2 mi south of Los Olivos, this inn makes an elegant wine-country escape. Rooms are furnished with antiques and original art. Seven rooms have wood-burning fireplaces; the inn provides room phones and TVs on request. The inn's tasting room serves boutique wines Friday through Sunday. At the Ballard Inn Restaurant ($$$), which serves dinner Wednesday through Sunday, owner-chef Budi Kazali creates sumptuous French-Asian dishes in one of the area's most romantic dining rooms. Pros: Exceptional food, attentive staff, secluded. Cons: Some baths could use updating, several miles from Los Olivos and Santa Ynez.
