This outdoorsy, golf-oriented resort and spa is set on beautifully landscaped grounds, with hillside views in nearly all directions. Nearby is the inn's 800-acre ranch, where you can take riding lessons and go on guided trail rides. In 2005 the resort completed a $70 million renovation. Two restaurants, a ballroom, and 100 guest rooms were added; all existing rooms and suites were refurbished to reflect the Spanish-colonial architecture of the original 1923 resort. If you're a history buff, ask for a room in the original 80-year-old adobe building. The four restaurants tout "Ojai regional cuisine," which incorporates locally grown produce and fresh seasonal meats and seafood. Pros: Gorgeous grounds, exceptional outdoor activities, romantic yet kid-friendly. Cons: Expensive, staff isn't always attentive.

The property is stunning and Ojai is a great destination for those seeking to be outdoors. We booked a few nights here as part of an escape from the January cold in Chicago. We felt like mole people emerging from the underground to bright sunlight, and the technicolor glory of all the surroundings. We enjoyed our room near the spa (and spa pool). In general, service could have been more attentive, but my husband had an informative and productive afternoon playing with their golf pro on their course. Also found the fitness classes to be great. We will definitely return -- and the winter months are a particularly good value. Just be sure to hunt for their special packages. We unfortunately booked at a higher rate than we could have received, and were unsuccessful in getting them to adjust our bill.

Everything about this resort was top notch. Enjoyed the relaxing spa and several pools while husband played golf. There are many opportunities to connect with nature through guided hikes, horseback riding, great bike trails, birdwatching. Service was friendly and relaxed. I can't think of a better place to escape a harsh winter (we're from Chicago) than this beautiful gem. Make sure you try the local Ojai tangerines before you leave.
